A detour well worth making!

Last week, en route to carry out some research on a new project in France, we stopped by Cageot in Faches-Thumesnil, just outside Lille – and were delighted by what we found. Billed as a “field-to-plate” food hall, Cageot is far more than that: an eco-designed, multi-use space that blends urban agriculture, independent food & drink operators, and community engagement. Set beside a retail park, the site (which was previously a car park) has been transformed into a thriving destination.

On a Wednesday evening, it was absolutely buzzing with every outside table booked: families, couples, friends, all enjoying the conviviality of this "green" oasis. We saw fresh produce (today cauliflower) being grown and sold on-site (produce at Cageot is 100% local), pétanque games in full swing, and a tangible sense of connection between food, place, and people.

Across its 6,000 m² footprint, Cageot offers over 5,000 m² of market garden cultivation, three independent food operators, two bars, educational workshops for all ages, and more. Recycled containers, repurposed materials, and a striking glasshouse roof complete the picture.

An inspiring example of cross-sector collaboration and a real-life showcase of how food, design, and social purpose can come together. Congratulations to Ceetrus, Nhood Services France, La Friche Lille and Growsters – a wonderful venue.
